September 2025

Meet Malachi

Our September Honoree for Light of the Month is an amazing four-year-old preschooler, Malachi Adams.

Malachi is receiving top-level care for Leukemia at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and top-level love from his foster care family at home in North Carolina! We just learned that after two years as a member of this extra-special family, Malachi is on his way to being adopted! That’s WONDERFUL news, and the DCC family is thrilled we could share in it!

Malachi is one of eight, with siblings: Jaedyn age 13, Max age 12, Brayden and Carter age 9, Maddie age 7, Amari age 2, and little Annie age 9 months.

Malachi’s mother said he shows a fondness for the outdoors and loves being around colorful flowers. He is nonverbal autistic but that doesn’t stop him from being the happiest little buddy his hero, Mickey Mouse, ever had! His family tells us that the best things about Malachi is that he is always smiling, is funny, and of course, is very brave.

Meet Aanvi

Meet the beautiful Aanvi Nimma. Aanvi is DC Candlelighters’ Light of the Month for February 2025. Thank you, Aanvi!

Aanvi is twelve years old and attends 7th grade at Brambleton Middle School. It was an interesting 2nd quarter with snow days and delayed starts to school. No worries as Aanvi was happy to spend the extra time with her baby brother, Devarsh. Aanvi fondly refers to two-year-old Devarsh as Deva. Aanvi shared with DC Candlelighters that she loves to chase Deva around, play cars together, and snuggle with her baby brother. Keep it up Aanvi as we are sure Deva loves all this playtime with his big sister.

Continue to shine your personality, Denzel, and keep being the strong boy that your mom says you are. And you know what else? DC Candlelighters does care about you. You are after all our Light of the Month and a special boy indeed! Together with all our families, we wish you completely well.

Meet Denzel

Meet our Light of the Month, Denzel Flores Carcamo. Denzel is a bright two-year-old boy that is receiving his care for Leukemia at Johns Hopkins. We know they are taking great care of him and providing him with activities while he is there. When he is at home, Denzel is in Parksville, Maryland, where the other play time happens. Denzel’s mom, Lidia, tells us that dancing to ‘baby shark’ is top of the list of talents for Denzel. We at DC Candlelighters can believe that because we know that Denzel is happiest when listening to music!

Meet Meghan

Meghan is a seven-year-old second grader from Ashburn. She loves to play with her big sister (ten-years-old), Claire, do tap and ballet, sew, knit, roller skate, ride her bike or skateboard and drive her new electric jeep.

Meghan has her own style of reaching out- she loves to go up to strangers and give them compliments. Way to make others feel good about themselves! Meghan said she loves DC Candlelighters because of our fun events with pizza. Meghan also said she is happiest when she is surrounded by her family. Together, DC Candlelighters will keep the events coming and her family will keep surrounding Meghan with lots of happiness.

Meghan was diagnosed with blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) in the spring. Meghan has completed six months of chemo and is excited to be finished in the summer of 2025.

October 2023

Meet Eleanor

Our friend Eleanor from Ridge, Maryland is our joyful October Light of the Month Super Kid! She’s a vivacious eight-year old who has many interests! Eleanor enjoys swimming, crafting, sewing, watching baking challenges and the show “ Unsellable Houses”. B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia does not stop this third grader from staying active. Eleanor likes to play outdoors and get dirty, and indoors, she uses her talents to make unique items for her friends and family. Eleanor even knows how to cook on a boat because she lives on a boat! Eleanor likes that DC Candlelighters plans many events where she can meet children like her- amazing warriors who are on the go seeking adventure and friendships. Eleanor is kind-hearted, helpful, curious, creative and playful. Eleanor is a perfect LOTM!

Meet Sawyer

Fabulous Sawyer was selected as our July Light of the Month Super Kid because he is a real firecracker and brings energy everywhere he goes! Sawyer turned eight in the spring, and this fall, will begin third grade at Tyler Elementary in DC. He loves baseball and soccer, playing Pokemon and video games, and he also plays guitar. Everyone who knows Sawyer loves Sawyer; he is helpful at home and in school, and is a kind friend to many. Sawyer also really loves to spend time with his fantastic little brother, Hudson. Both boys are frequent participants in DC Candlelighters Family Bingo Zoom Night. We joyfully celebrate Sawyer, a young boy who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in February 2020 and finished treatment in June 2022. Great things await you, Sawyer!

Meet Elizabeth

Our funny, smart June Light of the Month Super Kid is Elizabeth! She’s a determined five-year-old from Leesburg, who is finishing up pre-K at Karter Schools of Cascades. Elizabeth is quite the nature girl! She loves to play soccer, collect flowers, collect rocks and be outdoors. She never gives up and doesn’t let her 2022 diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia stop her. Elizabeth is happiest attending school, seeing her friends, dancing and singing. Our featured June warrior says what she likes about DC Candlelighters is all the events she gets to attend because it makes her very happy. You make us happy too, sweet Elizabeth!

Meet Grant

It’s easy to see why Grant is our May Light of the Month Super Kid! Grant, a six-year-old kindergartner from Vienna, is a determined, happy little guy who never gives up! Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, young Grant finished treatment in November 2021. He enjoys reading, soccer and swimming. Grant is also learning to code robots because he loves robots! Grant loves to be the center of attention, but happily shares the spotlight with his Little Brother Calvin. Grant is a fan of DC Candlelighters because, “they always have fun surprises coming up!” He’s always up for an adventure and we love that about Grant!

Meet Evelyn

Evelyn, a delightful six-year-old from Arlington, is our March Light of the Month Super Kid! She’s in the first grade and loves to ice skate and play soccer. She likes to think about school and is happiest when she is with her family. Evelyn is a Big Sister to Ruth, and the pair has fun doing things together. Evelyn reports, “What I like about the DC Candlelighters is they provide everything for you!” We are thrilled to spotlight this lively, joyful, loving little girl as our very first LOTM child! Congratulations!
